What is a NUANS Report?
NUANS (Newly Upgraded Automated Name Search) is the government's name-search system for corporations. The report compares your proposed name against existing corporate names, business names, and trademarks in the federal and provincial registries, and lists similar names in a 7-page report.
Inside the report: exact matches, close variations, phonetically similar names, and registered or pending trademarks that might conflict with your proposed name.
It does two jobs at once: it's the official search document filed with your Articles of Incorporation, and it reserves your proposed name for 90 days while you incorporate.
- Required for Named Corporations Incorporating under a chosen name requires a current NUANS report. Numbered companies don't need one.
- Reserves your name for 90 days The report is valid for 90 days, from the date it is issued. If the 90 days pass before you register/incorporate, you can simply order a new report.

When do you need a NUANS report?
- Incorporating a Named Company in Ontario An Ontario-biased NUANS Report is required to be filed with your Articles of Incorporation.
- Incorporating a Named Company Federally A Federally-biased NUANS Report is required by Corporations Canada to register a Named Federal Corporation.
- Incorporating a Named Corporation Provincially Alberta, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Northwest Territories, or PEI — your report and 90-day reservation apply to the jurisdiction you select.
- Changing an existing corporation's name A name change by Articles of Amendment needs a current report for the new name.

Yes. Each report reserves the one name it covers, so if you’re deciding between several options you can order a report for each and hold them all while you choose. Reports don’t have to be used — an unused reservation simply expires after 90 days.
Do numbered companies need a NUANS report?+
No. The government assigns numbered names automatically, so no name search is required. Only Named companies need one.
What's the difference between this and the free preliminary search?+
The free preliminary search gives an instant indication of availability, but it can't be filed with incorporation documents and doesn't reserve anything. The official Name Reservation Report is the government-accepted document that reserves your name for 90 days. Most entrepreneurs run the free search first, then order the report once confident.
Which jurisdictions does NUANS cover?+
Ontario, federal, Alberta, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Northwest Territories, and PEI — all orderable through the form above. Each report, and its 90-day reservation, is specific to the jurisdiction you select. British Columbia and Manitoba use their own name reservation systems, so a NUANS report isn't used there.

No. Only the official NUANS Name Reservation Report can be filed with your Articles of Incorporation.
Does the report guarantee my name will be approved?+
